  • What it requires: healthy gums, sufficient bone, and consistent hygiene and check-ups afterwards.

What is a dental implant and what parts does it consist of?

An implant is a artificial titanium root what is placed in the bone where a tooth is missing. An ... is screwed onto it abutment, and on the pillar, the crown: the visible part, custom-made in shape and colour.

Titanium has a property that makes everything else possible: bone bonds to its surface in a process called osseointegration, which takes between 3 and 6 months. That is why a well-integrated implant feels and functions like your own tooth: you bite, chew, and speak normally.

It is used to replace one single tooth without touching the ones next to them, several teeth through bridges about implants, the full dental arch —for that, there is a specific technique: All-on-4, the fixed arch on four implants.

Can I get implants? What we evaluate before recommending them

Most adults with a healthy mouth, yes. But there are conditions that are checked before, not after.

What needs to be in order

  • Healthy gums: Active periodontal disease is treated first, always.
  • Sufficient bone where the implant goes. If it is missing, there are grafts and sinus lifts that solve this in many cases — this is seen on the 3D scan.
  • Daily hygiene and check-ups: The implant requires more diligence than a natural tooth, not less.

What increases the risk — and we'll tell you

  • Smoking measurably reduces implant success and multiplies gum complications.
  • Uncontrolled diabetes and other diseases that affect healing.
  • Bruxism (clenching or grinding): may require a protective night guard.
  • Certain medications: Oral bisphosphonates do not prevent it (the risk is low and managed with a protocol), but intravenous ones at oncological doses require individual assessment. Bring your medication to your first visit.
  • Previous radiotherapy in the head and neck region: it is evaluated on a case-by-case basis, together with your oncologist.

Regarding diabetes, the honest answer has nuance: what matters is not the diagnosis but the control. With well-controlled blood glucose, the results are very close to those of a person without diabetes; poorly controlled, healing worsens and the risk of infection rises. And in young patients there is a prerequisite: the bone must have finished growing, which is not the same age for everyone.

None of this is guessed: it is seen in the examination, the X-ray, and the scan during the first visit. An implant is not for everyone, nor at just any time — and we prefer to tell you on the first visit, not after charging you.

How we work

Step-by-step implant

3D study

Examination, X-ray and intraoral scan before to touch anything.

Plan and quotation

We explain the plan on screen: how many implants, if a graft is needed, timelines, and a fixed price in writing. You decide with all the facts in front of you.

Surgery

The placement is done under local anaesthesia and is usually more manageable than expected. Discomfort is controllable the first few days with the regimen we provide you.

Osseointegration

For 3 to 6 months, the bone fuses to the titanium. Depending on the case, you will wear a temporary prosthesis in the meantime: we will not leave you without a visible tooth.

Final crown

With the integrated implant, the digital record is taken and the custom crown is fabricated. Shape, bite, and colour are adjusted with you present.

Maintenance

Regular check-ups and professional cleanings. It is the least glamorous part and the one that decides how many years your implant lasts.

3D-guided surgery: the implant is placed twice

One more fact you can verify: we work with implants Straumann and attachments 100 original % units — no generic replicas in the prosthetic part — and upon completion we hand you the implant passport, the traceability document with the reference and lot number of each component. If in ten years another dentist in another country needs to know what you are wearing, it is in writing.

The first time, on the computer. Each implant is positioned over the scanner and the X-ray. to the tenth of a millimetredepth, inclination, and distance to nerves and sinuses, decided before touching the mouth.

From that plan comes, when the case advises it, a 3D-printed surgical guidea guide that rests on your teeth or gums and takes the bur to the exact planned position. The second placement —the actual one— consists of reproducing the first.

What do you gain? Shorter and more predictable surgeries, smaller incisions in many cases, and an implant position also designed for the crown that will go on top and so that you can clean it well for years — what literally determines its duration.

3D teeth scanning with a digital intraoral scanner

From the scanner and X-ray comes the plan; from that plan, the surgical guide.

What others do not clarify

"Same-day implants": how much truth is there to it

You will see clinics advertising implants with a tooth "in 24 hours". The technique exists and is called immediate loading: place a temporary crown on the very day of the surgery. But it has three small letters that are worth knowing:

  • It is only possible if the implant achieves a sufficient bone stability, and that is measured during surgery, not promised beforehand.
  • What is placed on that day is a provisional; the final crown arrives after osseointegration.
  • Published evidence shows that immediate loading has a survival slightly lower to the conventional one. In many cases, waiting a few weeks is the smartest decision.

In this clinic, immediate loading is used when the case allows it, not as a complaint. If you are looking for same-day fixed teeth for a full arch, read our page at All-on-4, where we explain exactly what can be promised and what cannot.

Peri-implantitis and long-term maintenance

An implant cannot get cavities. But the gums and bone surrounding it can become diseased, and that disease has a name: peri-implantitis. The Spanish data that no clinic publishes: in the epidemiological study promoted by the Spanish Society of Periodontology (SEPA), half of the patients with implants presented peri-implant disease, and around one in four, peri-implantitis — with loss of the bone supporting the implant.

The difference between the two phases is everything. The mucositis —gum inflammation without bone loss— It's reversible if detected in time. Peri-implantitis, with bone already lost, is much more difficult to treat. Detecting it in time is exactly what check-ups are for.

That is why the European Periodontology Federation (EFP) guideline requires that every loaded implant enter a structured maintenance programme: tailored daily hygiene (we'll teach you how), professional cleanings, and check-ups as frequently as your risk level dictates. An implant without check-ups is an implant with an expiration date — we prefer to tell you before charging you anything.

"I have no bone": what options can be considered

It is one of the phrases we hear most often during a first visit, almost always inherited from another consultation. Reality has two paths, and neither is automatically better:

Regenerate the bone. Grafting and sinus lifts make it possible to create the missing volume. They work well, but it is worth knowing two things beforehand: they prolong the treatment by several months and increase the cost. Whoever tells you this after starting has told you too late.

Working with the bone you have. Shorter implants, alternative positions, or —when an entire dental arch is missing— the All-on-4 tilted implants, which anchor where the bone is actually left. The evidence does not show that regenerating is always superior to these alternatives: it depends on how much bone is left and where.

The decision is made based on the CBCT, with the millimetres in front and the two options explained with their timelines and prices. Never on a slogan.

Clinical transparency

The actual figures, with their sources

Advertisements for implants are full of unsourced claims like "98 % success rate". These are the published figures we use in our practice—with their nuances, which is where the truth lies:

96,4 %implant survival at 10 years (systematic review, Howe 2019). In patients over 65, it drops to 91.5 %, and the most conservative analysis puts it at 93.2 %.
1 of 4patients with implants develop peri-implantitis in the medium term in Spain (a study promoted by SEPA). Its prior phase is reversible with check-ups.
×2Smoking approximately doubles the risk of implant failure and is associated with greater peri-implant bone loss (meta-analysis).
−2.6 1Q3QImmediate loading ("teeth in a day") shows a slightly lower survival rate than conventional loading in comparative studies. Therefore, it is indicated only in selected cases.

How long does a dental implant last?

The most robust published review places implant survival at a 96.4 % at 10 years. It is excellent data — and it also means that not everyone makes it: the number drops with advanced age, smoking, and lack of maintenance.

That is why you will not find the phrases "for a lifetime" or "guaranteed" here. What is true, however: With good gum health, proper hygiene, and check-ups, an implant can last you decades. The crown, like any piece subjected to chewing, may need to be replaced before the implant.

How much does a dental implant cost in Tenerife?

Straumann implant with crown

From €1,990

Or from €65/month

We work with Straumann implants. The amount corresponds to the complete treatment with crown; the anatomy and needs of each case are confirmed with the 3D study.

Indicative price. The final quotation depends on the clinical evaluation and is provided in writing before starting treatment.

Beware of the hook price "implant starting at X €": it almost never includes the crown, and an implant without a crown cannot chew. The real price depends on three things: how many implants you need, if necessary bone graft, and type of crown or prosthesis what goes on top.

What does a dental implant quote always include here

  • The complete studyexamination, X-ray, and 3D scanner
  • The surgery and the implant, with the specified brand and model
  • The Pillar and the Crown — never "will be quoted later"
  • The provisional, if your case leads them
  • The check-ups of the first year, detailed in writing

Additional procedures, when needed

  • Bone regeneration: from €350
  • Connective tissue graft: from €499
  • Maxillary sinus lift: from €600

Not all patients need these procedures. They are only added when the clinical and radiographic study indicates them.

Everything that is not included in the main treatment is indicated with the same clarity. Flexible financing available; terms in writing at the clinic.

Before the implant: order matters

Two frequent situations where it is advisable to stop and plan. If your teeth are misaligned, it is often worth it align first and place the implant afterwards in its correct position — an implant does not move with orthodontics. And if you are missing more than one tooth or you wear full dentures that no longer fit well, consider fixed arch on four implants before deciding on implant by implant: it is usually a better solution and a better investment.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about dental implants

Does getting an implant hurt?

The surgery is done with local anaesthesia and there is no pain during it. The following days there may be discomfort and swelling that can be controlled with the guidelines we give you. Most patients describe it as more manageable than they expected.

How long does the whole process take?

From surgery to the final crown, between 3 and 6 months in most cases, due to osseointegration. With prior bone grafting, longer. We will provide the exact schedule for your case in writing after the 3D study.

Can I go without a visible tooth in the meantime?

No, if the tooth is in a visible area: a provisional is placed during osseointegration. The specific solution depends on the case and is decided in the treatment plan.

I smoke, can I get implants?

Smoking does not prohibit it, but it reduces implant success and multiplies the risk of peri-implantitis, and we will give you the numbers at the consultation. Reducing or quitting tobacco around the time of surgery clearly improves the prognosis.

Is there a maximum age for an implant?

No. What matters is general health, the gums, and the bone. We do know that implant survival is somewhat lower in older patients, and this is compensated for with more careful planning and maintenance.

Can my body "reject" the implant?

Titanium is a very well-tolerated material and rejection in the strict sense is extremely rare. What does happen sometimes is that the implant does not integrate into the bone — in about one out of twenty cases in the long term — and it can generally be repositioned after studying the cause.

I am missing several teeth, an implant for each one?

Not necessarily. Two implants can support a bridge of three or four pieces, and a full arch can be fixed on four implants using the All-on-4 technique. It is usually better and more economical than implanting piece by piece.

How much does a full implant cost, including the crown?

It depends on the number of implants, whether a graft is needed, and the type of crown. What we guarantee is the format: a fixed written quotation after the 3D study, with the crown included and the first-year check-ups detailed.
